Our work lives have become increasingly demanding, presenting us with ever more challenges at a full on pace. Add in personal or family needs, and it’s easy to feel constantly overwhelmed.
The more you’re trying to find a balance between juggling your business and having a personal life, the more these feelings of overwhelm and stress take over your day.
When I first started out, my first business grow pretty fast and within a few years I found myself spending more time in the office doing paperwork then being outside where all the action happened. 12-14 hour days were not uncommon and I found myself still working at 10pm several nights a week.
Our typical response to ever-growing workloads is to work harder and put in longer hours, rather than to step back and examine what makes us do this and find a new way of operating. I also got sucked up in this pattern of going, going, going. And yes, my bank account was growing but my social life was disappearing and slowly the balance between running a successful business and having a personal life was completely gone. I wanted to change things but did not know where to start, leaving me feeling completely overwhelmed and miserable.
This happened over 15 years ago and a lot has changed since. I have grown, learned a lot and developed a skill set which helps me to set boundaries, recognise patterns and take action. It took time and practice to change my mindset and beliefs but it was so worth it.
Investing in yourself really is the best thing you can do. It will pay back in so many different ways and will make your life so much more enjoyable.
Life is so much better feeling I am in control. Knowing how to prioritise. Not only do I work less hours and earn more, but I feel so much better within myself. I have time to go to the gym, catch up with friends for coffee, travel and explore the world and focus on the things that are truely important to me. I can feel inspired again and have more headspace, a clearer view of the world, am healthier and I have lost the constant tension of stress in my body.
If this sounds like something you want as well, book a date with yourself in your diary, I know you are very busy but if YOU don’t change anything NOTHING will ever change. Plan an hour or so, find a quiet place and treat yourself on something nice, a nice chai latte or your favourite coffee.
Sit down and start thinking about what it is that makes you feel overwhelmed. Is it the lack of choices, or maybe you have too many choices, why do you keep running around like a headless chicken, do you need an assistant, is it the pressure to do better, the need to proof yourself, a lack of setting up boundaries, the fear to charge more, etc.
Be honest with yourself.
Make a list and go over the things that you can change yourself. Now, you won’t be able to change everything yourself because if you could you would have done so already. Bringing awareness to how you get through the day, how you run your business is a first step.
From there on you can decide what action to take. You might find you have beliefs, patterns and feelings which are holding you back, and that’s okay, that makes you human. You might need some help clearing or changing those belief systems that are no longer serving you.
Take it one step at the time and reflect.
Change starts with you. Because you are worth it.
You know you’ve got nothing to lose so what are you waiting for!!
